Perhaps the most often used .itl file type is the iTunes library file. Essentially, it acts as a database with all relevant information that might be stored about a song. For example, there is certain statistical functionality built into the iTunes software which allows you to efficiently track your listening habits; the number of times each song in your library of music has been played is stored in this database file each time it is accessed for that purpose so that it may be displayed within the iTunes computer software interface.

Other data, such as album, artist, et cetera is stored within the music file itself. As a general rule, the only information stored in a .itl file is created by the user listening to the file and interacting with it in different ways. Song ratings, comments, and locally created playlists are other examples of data contained within this file. Should you come across a .itl file but don't know what program it corresponds with, try opening with iTunes first by following the related steps in the following paragraph.

If you notice that your iPod still has all of its music but no longer has any of the aforementioned user generated data, it is likely that your iTunes library file was somehow deleted or moved. If you would like to back up this file, it can be found in your iTunes folder, by default located with "My Documents," then "My Music." Simply copy the file and move the duplicate to the location of your choice for safe keeping. If you are trying to open a different iTunes library file than your own, rather than simply double clicking on it, ensure that it is in the correct directory and then open iTunes itself. If iTunes was already open, it will need to be restarted If you wish to create a competely new library, this can be achieved by holding the shift key while opening the program under the Microsoft Windows OS, or on the Mac OS by holding down the 'apple' key instead. One of the lesser used iterations of the .itl file extension is as a "league file" used by the Intellitipster team sports program, intended to be used as an aid in predicting outcomes. Each league file represents a different sports league or team that plays professionally, and these files are available for free download at their website. Of course, to open them though, you will need to pay to purchase the software, published by IntelliForecast Labs.
Finally there is software used for reliability analysis called ITEM which uses the .itl extension for its "item toolkit library," which can also store user created projects. This software is perhaps the least likely to correspond with an unidentified file that you may come across, as it is used by engineers who are generally heavily into a very specific field.
If none of these programs sound like logical candidates for software that you're likely to be using, it could be that the file was mislabeled and was not originally a .itl file at all. On the other hand if you're sure that, for example, you're supposed to be working with a certain type of file like an iTunes library file because your friend clearly identified and shared it, and you've followed the correct steps to open the file but you still get no result or an error when the action is taken it is likely that you are in possession of a corrupt file, meaning that it has been damaged in some way. If you think that this may be the case and want to eliminate that possibility, retransmit the file, if necessary from a different source, and try again. If you know the file is good and have tested it on another system, check that the installation of whichever program is being used was done correctly.
